MiSTer FPGA - Armed Police Batrider (アームドポリス バトライダー) / Raizing Arcade [BETA]
**BETA build- issues expected** Batrider has been on my list of arcade games to learn for a while now, having only played it in MAME a few times long ago. As this core advances past beta I hope to improve my skills gradually as well, and learn the game's systems properly. This is a complex STG with a large roster of characters to choose from, multiple game modes, and many tiny variables scattered throughout. Extended demo loop to show the variety of ships.
It's very daunting at first, but I've really enjoyed the couple playthroughs I've had so far. This video is my 4th playthrough. I didn't look into any guides for these initial runs, and have just been trying to learn the "Criminal" team's ships and get a feel for the Advanced course after playing through the standard one first, which stops at stage 5.
After my previous video of Out Zone on the Toaplan V1 hardware, its a fitting follow-up to show the Toaplan V2 hardware in action here with this Raizing bullet hell classic. They're really pushing everything up to the max here. The artwork is incredible also- both audio and visuals, with very crisp and responsive controls. Gonna be returning to learn more in this one for years to come!
This video has some inaccuracy because I didn't understand how the ranking system changes during the demo loops when recording this. A weird quirk about this game is that it starts off on a higher rank when you first boot it, and then returns to normal after the demo loop plays through several times. When recording demo loops for videos, I do it in a separate take to prevent having to re-record the demo every time I take another try at the game itself. This is achieved by splitting the video at a static screen with no sound/motion during the demo loop. With the extended loop shown in this video, and then restarting the game to record the actual run itself, the rank level will not match what would be expected normally here as a result. There is another method that DentNZ shared with me on Twitter, where you can enter the game's service mode and then press the 1p Start button to exit the service mode, and the game will have the proper rank/difficulty level also, instead of needing to wait for several loops of the demo to play through. This is a wild quirk that I have never encountered in any games in the past, and I'll need to keep this in mind going forward to show these games as accurately as possible in videos. I wonder how many other games do similar things?
