I played the first Ni no Kuni back in 2011 and enjoyed myself quite a bit. Ni no Kuni 2 completely spins off from the original. The combat has been revamped, and there's a new kingdom building simulator added on also. But does it work? Keep in mind, this review is a sarcastic fan's perspective on Ni no Kuni 2.
