Plot :
Sonic is called to save the day when Doctor Eggman attacks. However, Sonic discovers that Eggman has recruited Shadow the Hedgehog, Metal Sonic, Chaos, Zavok, and a mysterious newcomer named Infinite to assist him. Infinite proves to be too powerful for Sonic and easily defeats him.
Six months later, without Sonic to stop him, Eggman and his forces have managed to take over most of the planet, with only small pockets of resistance remaining. Knuckles the Echidna forms the Resistance along with Sonic's friends to combat Eggman's forces. In addition, they recruit a new member they nickname the Rookie. Knuckles explains that he has discovered Sonic is being held prisoner in Eggman's newly built Death Egg space station. The Rookie and the Resistance manage to steal a shuttle, break into the Death Egg, and rescue Sonic. Meanwhile, Tails is attacked by Chaos and is saved by Classic Sonic, who appears from a portal. Tails theorizes that Infinite's strange powers are affecting other dimensions, which may have pulled Classic Sonic into their world. Classic Sonic and Tails then spy on Eggman, who reveals that the source of Infinite's power comes from a device called the Phantom Ruby, and that he has a plan to completely destroy the Resistance which will take effect in three days.

Gameplay :
Sonic Forces is a platform game with action-adventure elements. Players run at high speeds around levels filled with obstacles and elements such as spring boards and boost pads. Levels are populated by robots and other hazards created by series antagonist Doctor Eggman. Scattered around levels are golden rings that serve as a form of health: rings protect players from damage caused by robots or other hazards, though they lose their rings upon being hit. Unlike other games in the franchise, lost rings cannot be recollected and players have unlimited lives.
