OMEN X Compact Desktop Hands On | Omen by HP Wearable VR Backpack PC #EGX2017
Omen X Compact Desktop review. We got our hands on Omen by HP's newest gadget, and it's a full desktop PC mounted onto a backpack, for fully immersive VR.
We love mad PC gaming stuff, and Omen by HP haven't disappointed us in the past. The compacy desktop backpack currently has no retail price, no release date or even a final spec, but already the Omen X Compact Desktop is on my wish list.
The Compact Desktop is more of a proof of concept at present, which is something HP Omen are known for, and is more than we've seen from their competitors when it comes to wearable desktop PCs!
The compact desktop's power comes from the backpack's two proprietary batteries, giving between 45 minutes to an hour's PC gaming. The Omen X Compact Desktop PC itself has an internal battery if you are caught short, and has a great desktop solution through a docking station. The fact that the Compact Desktop has a dock sold it to me. I was worried that it was only wearable, that unless you were VR gaming, the Omen X compact was useless. Far from it, the dock gives you more ports, the ability to use the Omen X Compact Desktop as a straight up desktop, and a way to use this gaming PC while its batteries are charging.
We don't know the final specs for the Omen X Compact Desktop, but the backpack PC we had a hands on with had a GTX 1080 in it. Considering the spec for all other HP Omen stuff is through the roof, you wouldn't expect less. Holding The HP Omen X Compact Desktop out at arm's length, it definitely has a weight. On your back, not at all. The Compact Desktop was fin to wear.
I am not sure if The Omen by HP backpack will ever REALLY be on wide sale, or if it is a marque device to separate them from the competition. But for a muck about at a show, it was a better solution than every other Vive VR setup I've seen at an expo.
If money were no object, I would buy this Omen X backpack PC for my regular desktop PC. The desktop PC is tiny mate and it looks wicked. I'm sure the spec is massive, plus it looks awesome.
