Have you ever thought to yourself 'I wish I could control a flying space penguin' or wondered how difficult would it be to avoid the false teeth of disembodied mouths? Well, some over at Konami had this though and put these together with a barrage of other insane ideas and created Parodius - Non-Sense Fantasy.
Parodius is a self-made parody of Konami's popular spaceship shooting series Gradius. The games share the same shoot em up gameplay. Shooting enemies, avoiding attacks and leveling up your ship (or penguin) the area where the games differ is the art and music.
Gradius is a traditional spaceship shooter so the art reflects this lots of alien worlds and space environments to battle through. Parodius, on the other hand, goes crazy, sometimes you are in space and others you are avoiding angry sky volcanos. They just throw nonsensical randomness at every turn and I can't help but love its quirkiness.
This is the first time I have felt that giving a game a new coat of paint changed the experience. It's much easier to take on the same boss again after dying when it's a cat in a pirate ship and not just generic spacecraft two zero zero one.
The games insanity keeps you going if not only to see what off the wall boss is coming next and this is good because the game is hard, like really hard. But thanks to unlimited continues it's possible to see the end of the game with some dedication and an afternoon to spare.
