0The PlayStation 3 (PS3) is a video game console designed and marketed by Sony Interactive Entertainment, serving as the successor to the PlayStation 2 and belonging to the PlayStation brand of consoles. It was initially launched on November 11, 2006, in Japan, followed by releases on November 17, 2006, in North America, and March 23, 2007, in Europe and Australia. During its time, the PlayStation 3 competed primarily against Microsoft's Xbox 360 and Nintendo's Wii as part of the seventh generation of video game consoles.
After speculation about Sony developing a 'slim' model, the company officially announced the PS3 CECH-2000 model on August 18, 2009, during the Sony Gamescom press conference. This updated version introduced a slimmer physical design, reduced power consumption, and a quieter cooling system. It was subsequently released in major markets by September 2009. Simultaneously, Sony introduced a new logo for the console, replacing the previous "Spider-Man" wordmarks that were named after their resemblance to the font used in Sony's Spider-Man films at the time. The new logo featured a "PS3" wordmark that incorporated the design elements of the PlayStation 2 wordmark, replacing the capitalized lettering used in the previous PlayStation 3 logo.
