0I don't know why Steven would be hiding in the middle a cave, but I guess we have to him to give him the letter.
Also the lower floor of the Granite Cave has a pitch black area with a little light around. To eliminate the darkness you'll need Flash, but I guess they intend you to go for the Gym first and not the cave which I thought first, since it seems they want you to use Flash. But honestly...you don't need it at all. So why did they make this a HM. It's completely optional, unless you're a person who really can't get through caves + no sense for directions, but I highly doubt that.
