Ready or Not - Movie Review
This review may contain spoilers.
"Ready or Not" (2019) directed by Matt Bettinelli-Olpin & Tyler Gillett is a (relatively) light hearted slasher / comedy. If you like films like "Get Out" (2017) & "The Menu" (2022) then this one is worth checking out as it's very similar.
Grace (Samara Weaving) is excited to get married, as she's always wanted to be apart of a family. She is getting married to Alex (Mark O'Brien), who is a part of a wealthy family which takes it's traditions very seriously. Grace must play a game at midnight to be officially welcomed in to the family, and her awful husband neglected to mention that there is a chance it would be a death game. Grace is forced to partake in a deadly game of hide and seek because the rich and delusional family believes that there is a curse on them and she has to be ritually sacrificed before dawn if they are to survive.
Ready or Not is a pretty good slasher comedy. I don't have many more drastic things to say about it to be honest but I'll try my best here for the sake of the review, just know that overall it's solid and worth a watch if you have nothing else you want to see first. It was pretty funny and offers a few good horror sequences, such as when Grace is trying to load her gun in the kitchen, and when she has to impale her hand on a nail to pull herself up. I'm a sucker for bottle location films and I'm also a sucker for quirky slashers, so this one has both for me.
The film feels awfully prolonged and extended at times, I would have preferred to chew and swallow my food here (the film being the food in this analogy) a lot sooner and earlier, as there is just filler fluff scenes in the middle to try and make it feature-length. There was zero chemistry between Grace and her husband. The husband character annoyed me a little because instead of him just being a simple plot device to place Grace in this dangerous entertaining situation, they attempted to portray him in a positive / redemptive light for the majority of the run time (It does get fixed by the end but still wanted to mention my frustration with him here). I guess the ritual sacrifice motive made sense, but it was a bit too cartoony to take seriously so I probably would have preferred just simple "sport" killing or some other excuse to hunt Grace in their home.
Ready or Not is pretty good but I've seen very similar films that are better. This is a slasher that tries to appeal to a wider audience with it's cheesiness and comedy, so you can decide for yourself whether that sounds like something you'd be interested in.
