Rebel Moon - Part Two: The Scargiver - Movie Review
1"Rebel Moon - Part Two: The Scargiver" (2024) directed by Zack Snyder was actually extremely cool, course corrected some issues, and ultimately exceeded my expectations. That's coming from someone who is a certified "Snyder hater" (not of him as a person, just of his movies), and I gave the first Rebel Moon a 2/10 and declared it the second worst movie that released in 2023.
Kora (Sofia Boutella) returns home to her village, seemingly victorious after slaying Atticus Noble (Ed Skrein). But Atticus returns thanks to his empire's great medical technology, stronger than ever. The Motherworld's fleet moves to attack the village once again, wanting their grain and resources. Titus (Djimon Hounsou) trains the village peasants to be capable in battle.
Okay so the weakest part of the movie is the same as the last one, and that's the story. Typing that plot synopsis up above in my own words was a little funny because of how identical it was to the previous film's. I think the reason I liked this one so much more is because I now understand that Zack Snyder is completely incapable of writing anything half decent, and so I was able to appreciate the elements that he does excel at. The visuals are the single best of any Netflix Original movie or series to date, and the action is most likely also the best of any Netflix Original movie or series to date.
Both halves of this film are so different and distinct to each other that it may as well be the true Part One & Part Two, and we can go ahead and forget the first Part One ever existed to be honest. The first half of this film takes the time to develop it's characters and team dynamic a little bit, and gives us direct show instead of tell backstory explanations of the most significant life changing event to occur in each team member's lives. Titus is a million times better in this film compared to the last one because he actually gets to do a lot of stuff and plays a major role instead of just appearing as a two second cameo every now and then like in the last one. Atticus was one of the bright spots of the first film and he's just as great here too, he is menacing and portrayed very well.
Rebel Moon - Part Two is unironically pretty great, especially by Zack Snyder / Netflix standards. I wish I could rate it higher but it wouldn't make sense to since this is technically a sequel which is nearly identical to the first film, except it's done far better and was released in a state that the first one should have been in the first place.
