Resident Evil 2 is a survival horror game developed and published by Capcom. Players control police officer Leon S. Kennedy and college student Claire Redfield as they attempt to escape from Raccoon City during a zombie apocalypse. It is a remake of the 1998 game Resident Evil 2, the second installment in the Resident Evil video game series.

Capcom first expressed interest in making a remake of Resident Evil 2 in 2002, following a successful release of the remake of the first Resident Evil, but production never started since series creator Shinji Mikami did not want to divert development away from Resident Evil 4. In August 2015, Capcom announced that the remake was in development, and the first trailer and gameplay footage was revealed during E3 2018. The game was released worldwide for Microsoft Windows, PlayStation 4, and Xbox One on January 25, 2019. It was acclaimed by critics, with praise directed at its presentation, gameplay, and faithfulness to the original. By December 2019, the game had sold over five million copies, outselling the original game.

Resident Evil 3: Nemesis is a survival horror game developed by Capcom and released for the PlayStation in 1999. It is the third installment in the Resident Evil series and takes place around the events of Resident Evil 2. The story follows Jill Valentine and her efforts to escape from a city infected with a biological weapon. Choices through the game affect the story and ending. The game uses the same engine as its predecessors and features 3D models over pre-rendered backgrounds with fixed camera angles.

Originally planned as a spin-off featuring a different protagonist, Resident Evil 3 was designed to have more action-oriented gameplay than previous Resident Evil games. It features a larger number of enemies and introduces the Nemesis creature, which periodically pursues the player. Accompanied by a major marketing campaign, Resident Evil 3 received positive reviews and sold more than three million copies worldwide. Critics praised the game's detailed graphics and the Nemesis as an intimidating villain, but some criticized its short length and story. Resident Evil 3 was ported to Dreamcast, Windows and GameCube to varying success. A remake is in the works for the PlayStation 4, Xbox One, and PC, which is to be released worldwide on April 3, 2020.

After the release of the Resident Evil 2 remake in January 2019, Capcom producer Yoshiaki Hirabayashi said they may consider remaking Resident Evil 3 if fans are vocal enough. On December 3, 2019, a series of images were uploaded to the PlayStation Network, leaking details of the remake and featuring updated designs of Jill Valentine, Carlos Oliveira and Nemesis. On December 10, 2019, Capcom officially confirmed the remake in PlayStation's State of Play event. The game will release on April 3, 2020.
