Resident Evil Gaiden, released for the Gameboy Color in December 2001, was Capcom's take on the renowned resident Evil series for the legendary handheld device. A spin off of the regular story, featuring multiple RE game series regulars Leon S Kennedy and Barry Burton. The story takes place om a luxury ocean liner, the Starlight. In typical RE fashion, a viral outbreak on board has mysteriously emerged and transformed the passengers into zombies. Leon and Barry have joined a new secret underground organisation, designed to put a stop to the dastardly deeds of the umbrella corporation. Leon was sent to investigate the Starlight incident, but radio contact with him was lost. Barry must investigate the incident and try to locate Leon, as well as the B.O.W responsible for the outbreak. While on board the Starlight investigating the incident, he is acquainted with a mysterious survivor, a young girl named Lucia. Events take hold, and Barry and Leon must fight for their very survival, to protect Lucia and accomplish the mission.
The game story is non-canon, and largely ignored by the franchise fanbase, as the story does not fit into any of the existing game series timelines. gameplay was basic, a birds-eye view exploration of the ship setting for the main, with first person view battles for the combat system. There were no puzzles, the premise of the exploration was basically to find a key, unlock a door, find another key, unlock another door, and so on ad so forth. Reviews were mixed. Being a Gameboy Color game, it was always going to be unable to compete graphically and likely to be unable to compete gameplay wise to the RE titles released on more potent machines. For a GBC title though, it more than holds up as an acceptable gaming experience.
