Revisiting Journey 11 Years Later
Once upon a time, people would debate whether or not video games were art. Then, in 2012, the indie game Journey came along and pretty much single handily ended the discussion. It won Game of The Year from a lot of different publications and won over the hearts of gamers in a way indie games rarely do. 11 years later, we still revere Journey for what it is; a beautiful, carefully-crafted, artistic experience that wants nothing more than to be a short, profound adventure. But for as beloved as Journey is, it is, at the end of the day, a video game where the only things you do are jump and walk through sand. While that lack of gameplay depth didn't bother anyone when Journey released in 2012, I couldn't help but wonder if this universally-adored masterpiece still held up. Especially when compared to modern video games like Celeste, Cuphead, Persona 5, and so on that balance artistry equal to Journey's with more complex gameplay. So I revisited the game and compiled some of my thoughts here. Let me know what you think about Journey, and thanks for watching!
