In the US Army, Pierson enlisted and rose swiftly through the ranks before meeting Joseph Turner in 1939, at the outbreak of World War II. Pierson participated in the Battle of Kasserine Pass in February 1943 alongside Turner, Arthur Crowley, and Davis. Although he was advised to retire since some of his troops were stranded at the pass, he refused. Many of Pierson's men were slaughtered when no reinforcements showed up despite his orders for them to hold their post until they did. For his actions, he was given an article 15, and Turner himself degraded him to the rank of Technical Sergeant.
