The Siege of Samarkand was a significant military campaign led by the Mughal Emperor Babur in 1497. Samarkand was a prosperous city located in present-day Uzbekistan and was considered to be one of the most important centers of culture and commerce in Central Asia at that time.

Babur, who was then a young prince of the Timurid Empire, had been driven out of his homeland in Fergana by his Uzbek rivals. In an effort to regain his lost territories, Babur marched towards Samarkand with a small army of around 12,000 men.

The city was defended by an Uzbek garrison of around 50,000 soldiers led by their commander, Sultan Ali Beg. The Uzbek army was well-equipped and had a strong advantage in numbers, but Babur's forces were more disciplined and better trained.

Babur's army began the siege of Samarkand in June 1497, and for several months, the two sides engaged in fierce battles. The Mughal army made several attempts to breach the city's walls, but they were repelled each time by the Uzbek defenders.

However, Babur was not deterred and continued to lay siege to the city. He used various tactics, such as digging tunnels under the walls, cutting off the city's water supply, and launching surprise attacks, to wear down the Uzbek defenders.

Finally, after more than six months of siege, Babur's army breached the walls of Samarkand and captured the city on December 10, 1497. The victory was a significant achievement for Babur, as it helped to establish him as a formidable military leader and secure his position as a ruler in the region.

The Siege of Samarkand was also a turning point in the history of Central Asia, as it marked the beginning of Babur's rise to power and the eventual establishment of the Mughal Empire in India.
