So, I tried to go into Silent Hill: Ascension with an open mind. It's the first part of Konami's grand relaunch of the Silent Hill franchise, to be followed by at least two more games and a new live-action movie based on Silent Hill 2. It should be exciting, and a fun thing to experience with other fans.

See, Ascension is an interactive narrative experience – think along the lines of games like The Quarry or Detroit: Become Human, except consisting entirely of the cutscenes, story choices, and QTEs. No exploration.

But you're also just one of many people playing the game all at once as it plays out live, and so your actions are just a drop in the bucket alongside millions of other drops in the bucket. If the majority of viewers make the same decision as you, you'll get to see things play out how you wanted. Otherwise your vote didn't matter and you wasted your points.

Yes, you use points to vote for each decision. And while each new Ascension account starts with some points, more points can be bought by purchasing them with real money. And each person can seemingly dump as many points as they want into each decision, meaning those who spend the most money hold the most influence over this whole experience.

Does that sound fun to you? Genuine question.

Each viewer can also create their own character from an extremely small list of cosmetic options, though additional cosmetics can also be bought, as well as obtained through the Season Pass. Because yes, there's a season pass.

To get some use out of this created character, you can buy raffle tickets with your points for a chance to win a cameo or guest spot within the story, where your created character and username appear in segments of an episode.

There's also simplistic mini-games you can play between episodes to help certain characters gain a little stat boost or something. Although without buying the season pass, most of these are locked. So... your mileage will vary.

As for the experience itself, it really does look about on par with Supermassive's Dark Picture Anthology – meaning the visuals oscillate between uncanny and just generally wonky. But the visuals are passable.

The actual plot however, in spite of a surprising number of monster appearances and chase sequences in the premiere episode, was just... dull. Lacking tension or any real cohesion between scenes.

On top of that, it just features a generic cult and some family drama so far. Can't really say whether it was good or bad because really, there just wasn't much to latch onto.

And as for the QTEs in action scenes, they're free to do, but succeeding in them is barely worth the effort. For one, the UI of the website is so cluttered, distracting and ugly that it makes it difficult to focus on the prompts that briefly flash onscreen.

And aside from that, so much of the audience either failed or intentionally ignored the QTEs that it felt impossible to actually win. Not that winning seemed to matter anyway, as the audience collectively failed a chase scene featuring multiple monsters only to then watch the featured character casually walk out of the area as if nothing was wrong.

And so, at least in this premiere, the action scenes lacked urgency.

You'd have to stick with it a bit longer to really judge, and this sucker is gonna have a new scene every day for the next six months. That's too much of a commitment for me.

I don't know, man. What do you guys think?

I'm Baffled, and I hope to see you next time. Bye!
