Smoke and Sacrifice Review (PS4/Switch/Xbox One): Don't Starve...Please?
181Smoke and Sacrifice is an indie game I've been playing ever since its release back in May on the Nintendo Switch. Now, as we're closer to the PS4 and Xbox One releases of this action RPG, it's time to discuss why this review took as long as it did to make! Did its gameplay, unique perspective, and hand-drawn visuals, all reminiscent of and seemingly inspired by Don't Starve, hook me in to the point that I couldn't stop playing? Smoke and Sacrifice is an indie action RPG developed by Solar Sail Games and published on May 31, 2018 by Curve Digital. Featuring heavy survival elements, a heavy reliance on crafting and inventory management, and beautiful hand-drawn visuals, it's easy to draw comparisons to 2013's Don't Starve. However, where Don't Starve focused purely on the survival aspect, Smoke and Sacrifice leads you down a focused narrative, putting you in the shoes of a mother Sachi who's been forced to sacrifice her first-born son Leo to the Sun Tree. In this world, the Sun has burned out, leaving most of the planet a frozen wasteland. The only pocket of humanity left is a single small village, where the survivors rely on a mechanical "Sun Tree," which according to the priests requires human sacrifice to continue running. Not everything is as it seems, though, and when she finds out that her baby may still be alive, she vows to find him in the mysterious underworld below, and find answers as to why the priests have deceived her village for so long.
