By the time the blue sphere special stage has been completed 16 times (silver or gold medals) the 'Super Peel-Out', 'Insta-Shield', '& Knuckles', and 'Debug' modes will be unlocked in the Mania Mode section. They can be turned on or off in the Game Options / Secrets menu of the Mania Mode section, which is accessed with the PS4's triangle button.

If '& Knuckles' is turned on then Knuckles will accompany Sonic/Tails/Knuckles in the level. If the Sonic Ability option is set to Mania Sonic's ability will be drop dash (hold jump in the air then release). If set to CD Sonic's ability will be Super Peel-Out from Sonic CD, which is a running move activated by holding up and pressing jump. And if Sonic's ability is set to 3&K then Sonic's ability will be an Insta-Shield as in Sonic 3 (& Knuckles), activated by pressing jump when already jumping.

If the debug mode is set to on various items and enemies from the level can be placed and activated at will. On the PS4 the square button will change Sonic (or Tails/Knuckles) into a ring, the X button will cycle through the list of other possible items and enemies, the direction buttons or left stick can move it around, and the triangle button will place the current item or enemy and set it active. Pressing the square button again will end debug mode and return Sonic (or Tails/Knuckles) to normal.
