Sonic The Hedgehog 2, sorti en 1992 sur Sega Master System aux USA et en Europe (pas au Japon). Le jeu sorti avant sa version Mega Drive (plus grand succès de la génération 16 bits).
L'histoire raconte qu'après son retour de vacances loin de l'île, celle-ci fut saccagée une nouvelle fois par le Dr Ivo Robotnik. Miles "Tails" Prower, le renard à deux queues, a laissé une lettre chez Sonic à la demande de l'ennemi. En disant que Tails a été capturé dans un endroit appelé "Œuf de cristal" et que Robotnik a fabriqué six robots pour se débarrasser de notre héros. Pour sauver Tails, le seul moyen est de réunir les six émeraudes du chaos.
