Today I tried Space Jam for the Sony PlayStation. Release Date: 1996
This game wasn't received well by critics when it came out. Apparently people weren't impressed with the mini-games, character balancing and the general simplicity of the gameplay.
After trying it for myself I kind of have to agree.
The mini-games are kind of buggy and the controls are straight up abysmal, you have to try it if you don't believe me. Also, these things are meant to be played before the game starts and in between quarters, which REALLY takes you out of the basketball game that's going on.
They can be turned off in the menu. I didn't like how the video turned out with the mini-games ham-fisted into each quarter break so I edited them all out and put them at the end of the video in a row. Being a PS1 game there were like 30 load screens I edited out as well, which probably shaved 5 mins off this video.
The second complaint about balancing wasn't game breaking but certain characters are better than others. MJ has max stats so hes an obvious choice, and I noticed that the shorter Looney Tunes characters were pretty useless on defense for blocking and rebounding.
As for presentation, its really not even as satisfying to play or look at as games like Looney Tunes B-Ball and NBA Jam from the previous generation of consoles. Maybe I was missing something but there weren't enough flashy dunks or shot variety. Though I did appreciate the voice acting.
I'd also like to note that I played on default settings aside from lowering quarter length from 3 to 2 minutes. One thing that is kind of cool is that you can play 2 v 2 or 3 v 3 and can sub in other characters at will during quarter breaks. A nice touch.
