Spec Ops: The Line is a third-person shooter. Although in the Spec Ops series, The Line does not take any story elements from previous titles. Lead writer Walt Williams has stated that there are many influences that have gone into the plot, the premise is inspired by Joseph Conrad's novella Heart of Darkness and to Apocalypse Now, a Vietnam War era adaptation of Heart of Darkness, in the game's feel and expression of no glory in war.
