*– VIDEO INTRODUCTION –*

This playthrough shows:

• a no-death run of nine attack waves on the beginner difficulty level ("1 Player Game A" mode).

There is no formal ending to the game.

*– GAME OVERVIEW –*

_Star Gate_ for the Famicom is a horizontal scrolling shoot 'em up (shmup). The game was ported and published by HAL Laboratory. It was released in Japan on September 24, 1987.

• _Star Gate_ began as a coin-operated video game for the North American arcade (AC) market, spelled _Stargate._ Developed by Vid Kidz and published by Williams Electronics, it was released on October 21, 1981.
◦ The game is a sequel to the arcade hit _Defender_ (1981). Due to legal issues, the name _Defender II_ was used on many home adaptations – including the NES port – and compilations.
◦ Compared to _Stargate, Star Gate_ lacks gameplay elements such as hyperspace and the Inviso cloaking device.

• Originally, _Star Gate_ was part of a deal for Atari to distribute the Famicom in the western regions, along with a set of three other games.
◦ Those games were: _Millipede (ミリピード )_ – [https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2GgwI0UkCug] – _Joust (ジャウスト)_ (both 1987) and a never-released unknown title.
◦ The development of these titles was outsourced to HAL Laboratory, who ended up self-publishing them years after the deal fell through.

• The jingle in _Star Gate_ that plays when you start a new game happens to be an extended version of the "Fight Start" theme from the arcade version of _Punch-Out!! (パンチアウト!!)_ (1984) – [heard at 00:20]. (Expanded with a _Star Wars_ riff?) Also, the "Game Over" theme from _Punch-Out!!_ is played between attack waves – [at 00:47, for example].
