DayZ, a mod for military simulator ARMA 2, was created just in time for you to hop on board the zombie hype train everyone is riding at the moment. DayZ has always been an absolute blast to play through, as long as you are into survival games and hunting, since rules of fit certainly apply here. DayZ is an ongoing, 60-player online survival game, but everything feels alarmingly real the moment you dive into Chernarus. Known for its punishing difficulty and swarming playerbase, DayZ is one of those games that is hard to get into, and even harder to master.
DayZ is the inspiration behind an entire wave of survival sandbox games, inspired by its punishing survival mechanics, engaging PvP multiplayer, and immersive post-apocalyptic zombie environment. Set in a dystopian world in which an unknown plague has turned humans into infected, DayZ blends survival mechanics with first-person shooting. With the player being an opportunistic looter, who is usually more of a threat than a zombie, DayZ puts an emphasis on the survival-realism of DayZ, with players foraging for food and fighting for whatever they can find within the games world.
As in any open-world survival game, players have to scavenge, fight, and survive a suburban area that has been overwhelmed by zombies. As a survivor with limited resources, players must scavenge across the world for supplies like food, water, weapons, and medicines, while killing or avoiding both zombies and other players, as well as occasionally non-player characters, as they try to survive in a zombie apocalypse. In any case, the interactive Bohemia titles have players managing survival mechanics like hunger, thirst, food poisoning, hypothermia, bone fractures, exhaustion, etc.
Then, the game throws in players cumbersome character advancement systems, along with tons of survival starters to deal with. Bohemia Interactives title challenges you to survive for as long as possible in an overland environment, where the weather, NPCs, zombies, other players, diseases, hunger, thirst, and cold are all likely to kill you. Overall, there is so much going on in the Bohemia Interactive titles that we should consider them thoroughly before choosing which of the DayZ-like games you will enjoy. Look, we are not suggesting that DayZ is everything for every PC gaming fan, nor is it a major achievement for 2013, in every aspect. Not only are we getting graphics powerhouses, solid strategy and simulation games, and better versions of a lot of games across multiple platforms, but we are getting the most imaginative, open platform out there - keep in mind DayZ was a free PC title before finding success on Xbox and Steam. In giving DayZ the 2013 Game of the Year, we are celebrating both the achievements in its genre, as well as the significance of it in 2013.
