TEKKEN 2 vs TEKKEN 3 ๐ #playstation #ps1 #namco
Oh, Tekken 2, you scrappy underdog! This game was like Namco's sophomore year in the school of 3D fighting games, and it was a glow-up for sure. The 1995 original had charm but was like a rough sketch compared to the masterpiece that Tekken 2 turned out to be. Released in 1996, it cranked everything up a notch - smoother moves, better balance, and visuals that made PlayStation fans drool. Flash forward over a quarter-century, and it's a nostalgia trip that still packs a punch, even if some of its mechanics and character balance feel like relics from a bygone era. But hey, there's something irresistibly charming about old-school Tekken, with its larger-than-life characters and pixelated blood spatter. It's like flipping through your high school yearbook โ sure, the styles have changed, but the memories? Priceless.
Then, enter Tekken 3, strutting in with all the confidence of a PlayStation poster child. This game was a debate starter before it even hit the shelves, breaking hearts with the news that it wouldn't be a carbon copy of the arcade version. But boy, did it compensate with added modes, eye-popping FMV sequences, and some of the slickest fighting moves you'd see on the console. It was an all-you-can-eat buffet of modes, with everything from Tekken 2 plus some zany new additions like Tekken Force and Tekken Ball โ who knew you needed a volleyball-fighting game mashup in your life? The gameplay was spot-on arcade, with a few quirky PlayStation-only characters thrown into the mix (Dr. Boskonovitch, I'm looking at you with your funky ground-fighting style). And visually? Tekken 3 was a feast for the eyes, pushing the limits of what the PlayStation could do. It was so close to being a perfect 10, marred only by some less-than-stellar exclusive characters and a Force mode that didn't quite hit the mark. But make no mistake, Tekken 3 was the PlayStation game to beat, a high-flying, hard-hitting reminder of why we fell in love with fighting games in the first place.
Which was your favorite of the two?
