-------------------------------

S3 Virge was the graphics card that came with the 2nd PC we had at home, a Pentium 166 (the first was a 386, I don't even remember which chip or graphics it had), the fact is that it was with this one that I saw for the first time a game with graphics acceleration. More specifically it was Terminal Velocity, and every time I played this game later, I remembered how the graphics looked much better than the regular MS-DOS version, because with the S3 it had texture filtering and the resolution was much better (from 320x240 to 640x480).

So I asked myself, could I emulate that on PCem, emulating precisely a Pentium 166 with that card? Well, I tried, and the game looked with a lot of graphic errors. So I thought of trying with 86Box, a more advanced fork of PCem. In this one, the emulation of the S3 Virge in graphics acceleration mode is better, but as you will see in the video, still far from perfect, especially because of the annoying flickering that the interface suffers. You can disable it, as I do sometime in the video, but then you don't see things like the distance to the next target. Hopefully they can improve it, if only for this game, because there is no other way to play it with those graphics, not even in the recent remaster you can enable texture filtering (at least when I tried it).

In addition to this one, I show 3 other games of the few that got to have support for the S3 Virge. The best one is Tomb Raider, but it doesn't differ much from the 3DFX version. POD works without graphical glitches, but it has pretty bad framerate (still playable) and without texture filtering, but this I saw in youtube videos showing games with the real S3 Virge that is normal. About this game I want to post another video soon.
