Over the years I've chatted to thousands of Final Fantasy fans around the world, and have a feel for the legacy of each game in the franchise, at least within my own little bubble of the internet. The sentiment towards Final Fantasy II has always been that it's one of the least favoured FFs in the series. Like any game, it has its fans and many who don't consider it a bad game, just not as good as the generally very high standard across the history of Final Fantasy.
As always, I aim to keep an open mind and as such have researched almost nothing about this game and will be going all the way back to 1988 to experience the follow up to what would become the Godfather of a great dynasty of games. Will I eventually be in the majority who don't rate this one particularly highly among the others? Or will FFII being a good game be a future Dansg08 hot take? Let's find out.
In true Final Fantasy style we have 4 heroes; Firion, Maria, Leon and Guy. Their village is attacked by the dark and powerful Palamecian Empire, causing them to join in the rebellion to restore peace. But first they must prove that they are worthy to fight for the cause, which leaves the young protagonists setting out on their first quest together to test their mettle out in a dangerous world. In this first part I'll get an early feel for the game and start to get acquainted with the world and mechanics, setting up what should hopefully be a fun and interesting experience, regardless of whether or not I end up liking the game.
