Dot Hack//GU is a memorable, yet messy anime. And in many ways, feels like an attempt to remix the material found in the previous games. And all of that is okay. Because the coming-of-age take at its heart is still really, really strong.

CHAPTERS:

04:12 - Vol.1//Rebirth, //Roots & //Terminal Disk

Side note: The music from Dot Hack SLAPS.

Random Notes and Thoughts That Didn’t Make it Into This Video (Otherwise I’d still be editing and it would never come out):

- At one point I call //Roots “subpar”’ which is reductive and not a wholly accurate representation of my rather complicated thoughts on the final piece.

- I call Ovan “bland and uninteresting,” and that’s mostly in regards to how he’s utilized in the story until he comes to the forefront of the action. I actually think on a conceptual level and thematically he’s got a lot to him, but I find his execution lacking because he spends so much time in the background. Had some of the events of //Roots been playable and better intertwined here, I think this opinion would have changed drastically.

- This half-formed paragraph kept getting moved around in the script until I cut it out altogether because I couldn’t find a place to fit it: “Another example of Volume Three’s inability to capitalize on past developments in favor of its full tilt descent into an episodic structure is the odd sidelining of Atoli. She’s certainly there, and she feels like a more fully-realized version of herself, but she doesn't have anything to do. It’s great to see her supporting Haseo by bouncing his own words back at him, but it’s kind of all she does. She isn’t really given anything to chew on in this game and it feels like a weird choice after all she went through in Volume Two.

- I spell Jaime Lannister's name as "Jamie," and as an ASOIAF fan, I'm filled with shame.
