122For many years the program Kukly was a great success on Russian TV. In 1999, Putin's puppet came on stage, which soon played the leading role in every episode. It wasn't long before the makers received an official letter that their "main character" had to disappear from the series.
Almost all Kukly puppets are now lying in the producer's barn, but not that of Putin. A search through the former employees reveals a Putin puppet after all but also shows how the censorship of the Kremlin got hold of the Russian media.
The VPRO is once again touring Europe and European history. The new series picks up the thread where the previous one ended: in 1999. Optimism at the turn of the century gave way to fear and confusion following the attacks on the Twin Towers, the credit crisis, an increasing flow of refugees, and an increasingly troubled relationship with Russia. But can you recognize history if you are in the middle of it? If nobody knows how it will end?
