The Grand Underground, Part 1 | Pokémon Shining Pearl 100% Walkthrough "6/48" (No Commentary)
In this part, we meet the Underground Man in Eterna City, get the Explorer Kit from him, and learn about the Grand Underground which is a vast system of tunnels and Pokémon Hideaways located under Sinnoh. In the Grand Underground there are three things we can do: Build a Secret Base which holds all of our Pokémon Statues, locate and explore Pokémon Hideaways which hold many unique Pokémon, and lastly mine walls with our Hammer and Pickax to find Treasures, Fossils, and Evolution Stones.
The first thing the Underground Man will want us to do is to simply go underground and come back to him, giving us a few treasures as a reward. These treasures can be traded to Hikers underground for rare TM's and other items for our Secret Base. The Underground Man's second request is that we do some mining and get an item from a mining spot. While underground you can see yellow dots on your minimap which represent dig spots. While near one, press R to send out a ping and make the dig spots shine. Once one is accessed, we can use the Hammer to dig in a large radius, but it will cause the mining spot to cave in quicker, reversely the Pickax mines in small precise spots but causes the mining spot to collapse much slower. At the top of the mining spot screen, you'll see a crack forming, once this reaches the other side of the screen, the mine collapses and you'll lose any treasures you haven't fully uncovered, so be careful with your actions. Once we get a mining spot treasure, we can return to the Underground Man for our next reward, a Digger Drill, which allows us to make a Secret Base. Press the Y Button to open your menu and select Go Up to leave the Grand Underground.
Another thing to note is that you'll find various NPC's in the underground. Hikers will either sell you TM's and Treasures for your mining items, buy your treasures in return for mining items, or they'll offer to heal your team. You'll also find randomly named NPC's standing in halls, these are exclusively for getting the Pokémon, Spiritomb, and I'll have a video for that later on as well.
The Underground Man's third request is that we make a Secret Base. All we have to do is go back underground and click on any wall we want to setup our Base in the form of a cave opening. This will consume our Digger Drill however, so you'll need to buy another from the Miners located underground for a few treasures. Once inside the Secret Base, we can setup any Pokémon Statues that we find while mining to increase the chance of finding that specific type of Pokémon. For example: a Mismagius Statue would slightly increase the odds of encountering Ghost-Types when entering a Pokémon Hideaway. Keep this in mind as once we beat the Pokémon League, the vast amount of Gen 1-3 Pokémon will appear in the various Pokémon Hideaways down here! Once your Secret Base is built, return to the Underground Man for a few uncommon types of Poke Balls, much earlier than we'd normally get access to them.
With that done we can now explore the Pokémon Hideaways. These are the square rooms on your minimap with "?" on them, there are small and large ones. Each room has a set group of Pokémon that can be found and the ones we can find will increase as we progress through the Story. If you don't see something you want, just leave and walk back in to reroll what Pokémon are in the room until you find it.
That's more or less all there is to the Grand Underground, and I'll be uploading another part after the 2nd Gym for more exploration. I'll make more elaborate Mining and National Dex Farming videos in the Post Game, so until then I won't return to the Grand Underground. Feel free to explore on your own and get items/pokemon!
