Located in post-apocalyptic Oregon , two years after the onset of a global pandemic, former motorcyclist Deacon Saint John discovers the possibility that his wife, Sarah, is still alive, leading Deacon to find Sarah. Days Gone is played from a third-person perspective, in which the player can explore an environment with an open world . Players can use firearms , melee weapons and improvised weapons and can use stealth to defend themselves against hostile people and cannibal creatures known as Freakers. A major game mechanic is the motorcycleDeacon, which is used as the main mode of transport of the main character, as well as as a mobile inventory to carry ammunition.
