So, Nintendo used to release games on floppy disk. Back in the days of the NES - or rather, the Famicom - Nintendo decided to take a gamble on a method that would potentially allow for games that were simultaneously bigger than what cartridges could offer but also cheaper.
This was the Famicom Disk System (FDS). Released exclusively in Japan in 1986, this would be one of the oddest pieces of Nintendo hardware ever released. It would include massively popular titles such as Super Mario Bros. 2, the original Metroid, and even a variant of the original Super Mario Bros. that was based off a popular late night radio show.
The Famicom Disk System is weird. It’s retro, too! And it’s definitely worth diving into today.
