The Quest - Dead Or Alive 2
"I'm on a quest to play every fighting game ever, and I'm taking my friends along for the ride."
Often brushed off as "The titty Game" and buried beneath shady platitudes about "Core Values", or worse, being considered a Virtua Fighter knockoff, the Dead or Alive series deserves better. Sure, the first game was a mostly forgettable game that didn't bring much to the table, but starting with this sequel (which happens to be my favorite game in the series) a host of tweaks and improvements are made that help DOA form it's own identity. The game introduces a Hold System, which works much like a Parry or Guard Impact, and that combines with the strikes and throws to create an incredibly offensive Rock Paper Scissors mechanic. Another interesting design choice was 3D movement and "Danger Zones" that make stage presence incredibly important.
Interestingly, The arcade and console versions have entirely different control schemes and an overhauled Hold System, showing that even in the porting process the team was working on improving the series.
