The Quest - Famicom Fighters
"I'm on a quest to play every fighting game ever, and I'm taking my friends along for the ride."
The amount of care and love that must have gone into Famicom Fighters is immediately apparent by the start of the first round. Almost everything in this game from the background elements to the special attacks to even the sound cues are all carefully selected to provide the maximum amount of nostalgic throwback humanly possible. Most impressive is that each character is made up of new sprites, as opposed to just being a compilation of NES sprites. It is a three button game, with Punch, Kick, and a Special button that handles calling your assist, throws, and your counter attack.
In order to fit even more references and fan favorite characters into the game, Famicom fighters has an interesting assist system. Every character in the game can choose one of three unique NES characters to help them out during the fight by spending a bar of a separate meter that charges alongside the regular super gauge, and the player can even hold both of their attack buttons to initiate a SNK-styled charge that fills both meters. You can also use that meter to do a guard cancel attack and break out of pressure. Due to the usage of only two attack buttons, this game has a lot of command normals done by holding a direction and pressing one of your buttons, giving lots of variety in attacks or combos.
Although the version that we played was made in Mugen, there is an Ikemen Go version in the works, and that's very exciting news indeed.
