The introduction of a third channel was awarded to the BBC. And on the 20th April 1964, BBC2 was introduced to the public. Well, sort of...

It's original debut around tea-time was delayed, due to a fire at Battersea Power Station. Causing a major power failure across parts of London. The following day, the 21st April, BBC2 began transmitting properly, with the first programme shown, being the now iconic kids show, Play School.

BBC2 also received a rebrand to its main ident in 1967, but this was more than just a change in identity. As it marked the shift BBC2 was making, from black-and-white programming, to full-time colour broadcasting. When colour TV units could be purchased, for those who could afford it, programmes could be enjoyed in their full glory. Particularly sports programmes, with events such as Wimbledon and snooker tournaments proving hugely popular amongst colour TV owners.
