The Unbearable Weight of Massive Talent - Movie Review
1"The Unbearable Weight of Massive Talent" (2022) directed by Tom Gormican is an eccentric unorthodox comedy which is a lot of fun. I definitely recommend it, but I would be aware that rather than doing one thing particularly amazing, it does a few different things pretty decent, meaning it has something for everyone but will not be the top of the tower in any of these areas.
Hollywood movie star Nick Cage (Nicolas Cage) is desperate for money and accepts a birthday party invite in exchange for a million dollars. Nick wants to retire from acting so that he can spend more time with his daughter. The event he is attending is for a Nick Cage superfan named Javi Gutierrez (Pedro Pascal), and the two of them hit it off and form a strong friendship. The CIA guilt trip Nick into helping them locate a hostage little girl, whom they believe is being held by Javi.
The Unbearable Weight of Massive Talent is a very charming and entertaining watch. The duo of Nicolas Cage & Pedro Pascal are what carry the film and are the reason to watch. While it's not the single funniest thing I've ever seen, there are certainly a few jokes on the mature end which will make you laugh and smile. This film could have risked being an ego trip for Nicolas Cage but it ended up quite endearing and humble actually, showcasing his human side and even making the inside joke about his well known real life debt problems.
Where the film loses me a bit is some of the meta, "movie within a movie" references and joke attempts. This is a film which claims to be a character driven for adults drama that criticizes mainstream action blockbusters, and yet that's exactly what this is, especially towards the final act. The shots that were fired here could only hit their target if the film was better than what is was firing at, but I would argue it's not really. What it does have is a super charming and likeable duo whom completely carry the experience and redeems most of it's other faults.
The Unbearable Weight of Massive Talent is a must watch if you are a fan of Nicolas Cage and or Pedro Pascal. Plus if you are a superfan of Cage like Javi is, then there is heaps of references to be appreciated here.
