Hello all! I said that IN would be the last but I wanted to cross off Subterranean Animism before the year ends really.

Plot in SA is that a geyser suddenly erupts out of nowhere and Marisa and Reimu decided to make a hot spring out even though earth spirits are emerging from it. Patchy eventually senses danger from this little incident and consults Yukari about the matter. Yukari agrees to it then sends Reimu & Yukari down to the underworld.

From what I can tell, the gameplay is very similar with MoF only in SA, you have personalized bombs again. There's also the option system that's similar to gradius where you have little orbs that shoots bullets.

My huge gripe with SA is that your bomb is connected to your firepower, bomb too much and it'll cost you your firepower. The life piece system is a mixed bag for me, mostly because it's only obtained by finishing both non spells and spell cards, if you die then no life piece.

Difficulty is just insane even on normal, stage 1 and 2 are fine but everything begins to spike the moment you reach Yuugi. Stage 4 isn't too shabby and the patterns for Satori are much easier to deal with if you're playing as Reimu C. Stage 5, everything hurts here, Orin can eat away at all you're lives as well because her patterns are way too hard to dodge. Final Stage on the other hand isn't too bad, Okuu is surprisingly manageable (minus her final spell card.)

If you're looking to 1cc this, I highly recommend you stick to Reimu C because her bomb can get you out of any situation. I've tried every other shot type but Reimu C just takes the cake here.
If you're good enough then Marisa B is also an okay choice given how flexible her shots are. Her bomb isn't too bad either but you have to be close to the bosses if you want to deal massive damage with it.

Overall, SA is way to punishing. It's doable but the spell cards feature way too much micro dodging. The rest of them are almost unavoidable to a point it forces you to just bomb. Though I can't bring myself to hate SA, I love the cast of characters and especially the music. Okuu's theme hits everything I love about final boss music.
