U.N. Squadron (エリア88) is a title based on a manga series from Japan called Area 88, which is also the game's Japanese title. It was originally released on the CPS arcade hardware by Capcom in 1989 and later ported to the SNES. The game features the same characters as the manga, and their mission is to stop a terrorist group known as Project 4

UN Squadron Arcade Review

U.N. Squadron is a very pretty, perfectly competent and — particularly as the levels progress — reasonably challenging shoot 'em up. Worth a few credits of any blastalong fan. Quite what the secretary general of the U.N. would think of this kind of unilateral aggression, though, is anybody's guess.

The opening level may seem a little too tough but the difficulty curve is otherwise well judged in what is a challenging game. The occasional instances of slowdown are unfortunate but there’s not much else to fault with this excellent shooter. With some great music, varied levels, exciting action and interesting bosses, U.N. Squadron is a game that’s enjoyable to play through again and again.

Veredict

U.N. Squadron on Super Nintendo may have made some sacrifices, but in the end the game is longer, more intense, more demanding and simply more interesting than the arcade version. Only regrets: an over-inflated difficulty that makes the game more frustrating than it should be, and levels that are still a bit empty, but all in all, this is a game that will keep you busy much more than the original.
