Director Stephen Sommers had managed to create interest in the long dormant "Mummy" franchise in the early 2000s.

There seemed to still be interest in Universal's classic monsters... why not bring back a few more?

Unfortunately for 2004's Van Helsing, not every character in the lineup was seemingly ready for a return.
