Warhammer 40,000: Mechanicus - A PlayingHardball In-Depth Introduction, Tutorial And Review
Welcome to #playinghardball
We are taking a deep look at Warhammer 40,000: Mechanicus.
Warhammer 40,000: Mechanicus is a tactical turn-based video game based on Games Workshop's Warhammer 40,000 universe. The game was developed by Bulwark Studios and published by Kasedo Games in 2018.
In this game the players control a unit of Adeptus Mechanicus forces whose tech-priests and troops are fighting tactical battles in the tombs of the Necron World Silva Tenebris. Their mission is to gain knowledge about the enemy, salvage what they can and destroy any threats to humanity of the dystopian year 40,000. The players can chose their squad out of a number of tech priests and different unit types. The exploratory missions in the tombs gradually awake the sleeping Necrons.
The Warhammer universe is set in a dark future of the human race, in the 41st century. Humanity is battling different types of aliens, the xenos, for dominance in star systems – or just for survival. It is a dark science fiction version of our reality with certain influences from classic fantasy.
In this review you will see an in-depth introduction to the game and its mechanics followed by my conclusion. After that we look into mid-/late-game content and evaluate that. Be advised that that later part of the video will contain SPOILERS.
The game itself feels like a strong adaptation of a board game. The atmosphere created by music, sound effects and nice graphics plus some of the writing is really cool. The game has some experimental feeling to it and tries some new ways. That is quite interesting, but did not manage to help me keep up my attention. The reason might be that the gameplay is relatively limited and even the number of weapons, enemies and one's own units cannot prevent a sense of repetitiveness after an average playtime of just about 30 hrs. Also the maps started to feel rather repetitive after too short a while. What you do in the game feels limited despite some factors influencing tactical decisions.
There is some more professional writing than in other Warhammer games. In general it was nice as it added to the lore of the Warhammer universe. Some lines and dialogues were humorous and good. Often I felt that the dialogues were lengthy, sometimes tedious and obsolete though.
All in all I rate this game in the higher 70s/100, probably around 77. In the great number of games in the Warhammer universe (too many are only of average quality) Mechanicus is certainly one of the more interesting titles, although it looks like more than it actually is. It is far away from the magical threshold that would make an excellent game though. This is a bit unfortunate as the Warhammer universe in general is pretty cool stuff. Still, for a while and a low price it is worth looking into. Fans neither need to hesitate.
