The renowned Monday Night War not only fueled the intense rivalry between the then WWF and the now defunct WCW, but also gave rise to several wrestling games showcasing both federations. While not every title stood the test of time, this heated competition undeniably contributed to an overall elevation in quality. Without this "war", we might have missed out on instant classics like WWF SmackDown! 2: Know Your Role.
However, my personal connection with WCW Mayhem, a title I eagerly anticipated as a '90s Pro Wrestlingaholic, didn't quite click. It's not all negative, though. The diverse game modes added depth and longevity, and the developers deserve credit for incorporating a vast roster of wrestlers from World Championship Wrestling (WCW), including late 1990s wrestling icons. The execution of moves and maneuvers also demonstrated credibility, surpassing some contemporaries.
Regrettably, the disappointment set in when it came to the models and animations. While I'm not overly fixated on graphics, I anticipated a more polished and visually appealing presentation for such a hyped game. This sentiment intensified when comparing WCW Mayhem with other wrestling games of the time. The audio, too, felt lacking, with crowd cheers or boos blending into a monotonous noise.
Yet, my primary critique stems from gameplay. The controls, in my view, lack the responsiveness and smoothness expected. Matches carry a clunky feel that verges on frustration, and selecting opponents, especially in matches with more than two wrestlers, becomes a daunting task. Executing moves seems unnecessarily challenging, making even a Tekken combo appear more straightforward by comparison.
TL; DR While WCW Mayhem had its strengths, it doesn't hold a candle to the likes of the aforementioned SmackDown!
