We've got a quick sneak peak of a early alpha build of the upcoming tactical-RPG "Tenderfoot Tactics" to be released sometime in late 2019 / early 2020. (Read On)

Published by Badru, and developed by Badru, Michael Bell, and Isa Hutchinson, you might find something slightly familiar about the game's style. Collectively these creators made up a major subset of the talent behinds the games "Eidolon", "Viridi", and "Fire Place" published by Ice Water Games.

As with those titles, Tenderfoot Tactics utilizes similarly minimalist graphical starlings while it instead emphasizing a vibrant color palate and the use of defined shapes to be more evocative of the atmosphere than any detail-oriented approach. It's a style that I tend to think about as perhaps "pixel impressionism,"

Though "Tenderfoot Tactics" is still in its alpha phase, you can already see the foundations of something rather exciting given the huge build variety and nifty open-world RPG-ish adventuring. At least speaking for the current build, the character classes are shiftable (called "evolving") from the other classes. The new ones acquired though cumulative upgrading of other classes to the next stage that open up new possibilities (with say, scout 2 opening possibilities for knight 1; scout 3 opening archer, knight 2 opening, lets say, dark knight, and so on). You'll see the scout, knight, and archer in this video, though as you can see from the silhouettes that are a SHITLOAD of other alternative classes to follow.

Each class has its own set of unique abilities, with not just specific focusses on "all melee" / "all ranged" but rather variations of techniques with, for example, the normally bow-friendly scouts having a rather brutal garotte technique allowing them to do a substantial double melee damage if able to attack from behind the target. Like the class system, the skills upgrade are freely available for alteration (outside of combat) for ideal experimentation.

The turn-based tactical game play particularly emphasises a lot of techniques of attack/buffing/de-buffing that consequently adjust the turn order in your benefit. Each attack will drop the next enemy down by one spot of the character rotations, though with calculated tactical advantage one can imagine scenarios of combined RPG "stun-locking" with each character attacking so as to prevent the enemy NPCs from ever being able to attack that round.

Aside from the crazy visuals presented, the random combat arenas generated upon enemy encounters also feature some rather crazy mechanics (often tied into certain skill sets) with rapidly growing shrubbery that might just block your path, perhaps to your benefit, perhaps to your detriments. Some of your skills have side-effects speeding up the growth factor, others slowing it down.

There are plenty of means to destroy those shrubs along with other techniques designed for healing yourself, though time is of the essence with each turn being movement/attack so you're almost never completely out of range from at least one brutal thrashing.

While it's hard to say what elements will remain and which will be phased out, I can say for sure that they've certainty got the foundations for one mega cool game here with a hell of a lot of promise.
