"X-Men: Mutant Wars" for the Game Boy Color is an action-packed side-scrolling beat 'em up game developed by Digital Eclipse and released by Activision in 2000. Set in the Marvel Universe, the game allows players to take control of the X-Men characters as they battle against various villains and enemies.

Players control a roster of X-Men characters including Wolverine, Storm, Iceman, Gambit, and Cyclops, each with their own unique abilities. Switching between characters is helpful, as each mutant has limited attacks based on their powers. The game features multiple stages set in different locations inspired by classic X-Men comic book settings. The inclusion of an exploration element adds some variety, requiring players to find hidden keys to progress through levels.

The graphics are colorful with large sprites and a variety of enemy characters to fight. The side-scrolling action lacks depth though, with players able to bypass most enemies by simply running past them. Boss battles provide some challenge, though, requiring players to employ different techniques to defeat powerful enemies. The addition of a Battle mode, where players must navigate through boss battles with the original five X-Men characters without regaining lost lives, adds some replay value.

"X-Men: Mutant Wars" may offer some brief entertainment for fans of the X-Men franchise, but its clunky design and lack of depth prevent it from being a truly good game. There is a multiplayer mode, allowing to team up with a friend via link cable for cooperative gameplay, and The Battle mode adds a bit more replay value to the normal game. Still, "X-Men: Mutant Wars" doesn't live up to expectations.
