Kia's latest crossover has been expected for some time, but I didn't expect it to be quite what wa announced in LA. Instead of a micro CUV like the upcoming Hyundai Venue, Kia opted for something more like the Jeep Compass in overall size. They also decided to give it more ground clearance than most small CUVs in America and the ability to command a full lock of the center coupling.
The Kia Seltos looks an awful lot like the larger Telluride from the Korean automaker. We at KBB think that's a good thing since we just awarded the Telluride the Best New Model of 2020. Is the Seltos just as good? Let's take a look.
Kia's are pretty hot right now thanks to the Stinger and Telluride. To keep the momentum going, an all-new SUV joins the lineup for 2021. The new #KiaSeltos slots between the Soul and Sportage in the lineup and shares a platform with the Hyundai Kona. Unlike its Hyundai counterpart, the new #Seltos which is named after the son of Hercules, has its own unique look and comes available with the same 1.6L turbo engine with up to 175 HP with AWD available. Expect the new #Kia Seltos to go on sale in Spring 2020.
Kia offers two different four-cylinder engines in the Seltos: a 2.0-liter that makes 146 horsepower or a turbocharged 1.6-liter that pumps out 175. We were able to sample the Seltos with the turbocharged 1.6-liter in Korea and found its power to be more than adequate. While the base engine is mated to a continuously variable automatic transmission (CVT), the turbo comes with a seven-speed automatic. All-wheel drive is optional with both engines. The Seltos offers a firm but mostly smooth ride and handling is sharp for an SUV—it's far more entertaining and composed than rivals such as the Jeep Compass and Mitsubishi Outlander Sport.
