GAME REVIEW IN DESCRIPTION

Completion criteria: Finished every level.

This is Action Force for the Commodore 64 which is a shoot em up that is based on the Action Force army action figures.
The goal of the game is to protect a land based vehicle called the A.W.E Striker using a helicopter while it traverses a level.
The player controls the helicopter and must protect the A.W.E Striker by shooting enemies and removing terrains hazard by bridging pitfalls and shooting down barriers.

The graphics in the game are filled with impressive detail, every entity has a lot of detail and the player and the enemies have many frames of turning animation that look very sleek especially with the fast paced nature of the game.
The HUD is clearly presented and at a glance it is possible to see how much ammo remains. However the health for the player and A.W.E could be better represented as damaged is presented as a incremental number which doesn't mean much until the player explodes when it reaches 200.

After so much has clearly been put into this game it is therefore a shame that the gameplay is made so frustrating by its incredible difficulty, even from the first level. Enemies swarm around the player from the moment the game starts and being hit by a jet's bomb results in instant death.
The difficulty is increased by having to simultaneously having to shepherd the A.W.E across the level and hoping that it too doesn't get destroyed or that it doesn't crash into the level hazards.
Furthermore, your health, fuel and ammo doesn't recover, even after completing a level and finding a station to reload and rearm just makes the helicopter a sitting duck for the swarming enemies.

Its worth mentioning also that the bridge pieces required to allow the A.W.E to traverse pitfalls are actually needed on later levels so the player will need to reacquire them after the A.W.E has passed the pitfall.

Regarding the later levels, they do introduce new enemies and hazards but curiously they are actually easier to deal with than the 'swarming' enemies found on the first level, so as these enemies become less common I personally found the game easier as it goes on.

Overall, graphically this game is fast and nice to look at, but the difficulty will put most people off playing when trying to get through the first two levels.
