Aer memories of old is an open-world combat-free puzzle adventure game with a beautiful minimalistic art style. Developed by Forgotten Key, Aer lets you transform into a bird and soar through the skies as you explore a fantastical world of floating islands. You explore ancient ruins and solve puzzles, with each step leading you closer to the end of the world.

In Aer, the gods of old have been forgotten, lost to time and the events that shattered the world, an event that left only fragments of islands floating in the sky. Now this beautiful world of endless skies, colourful islands and ancient ruins is in danger of falling into darkness as a long-forgotten enemy of mankind, the Void, grows stronger.

You play as Auk, one of the last shapeshifters. She can transform into a bird and is sent on a pilgrimage to the Land of Gods. She must piece together the history of the world, discover the events that led to the shattering and find a way to save the world from the Void.

The game is very short but a lot of fun. It took me around two hours to complete and I had a blast doing so. The flight mechanic brings a new level of freedom to the exploration. You can soar through the skies, dive through clouds and freefall onto landmasses to your heart's content. It is done very well, the controls are easy to get the hang of and you will be having fun in no time.

The game only has three ruins to explore, and the puzzles won't give you any problems. They are pretty much all platforming puzzles. Common sense will lead you most of the way and reading the text dialogue and observing your surroundings will take you the rest. There are some smaller puzzles to solve outside of these main ruins and each of these will provide you with a key to let you unlock the main ruin. It's all very simple and streamlined but with just the right amount of uncertainty to keep it engaging.

There are also some other hidden secrets to find around the world, mainly scrolls and monoliths that will explain more of the history of the world. It would have been nice to have some collectibles or something to give you more incentive to explore further afield, but just randomly flying around as I did will let you discover some.

Overall Aer: Memories of Old is a fun little game. It is very relaxing flying around and the puzzles, although easy are well thought out and tie nicely into the lore of the world. Movement feels fluid and the controls are nice and simple. The art style is beautiful and vibrant and seems to fit perfectly with the theme. The game is on sale a lot and that is definitely the time to grab it as it is pretty short. I don't think I would have felt quite as content with my time playing if I had paid full price for a 2-hour adventure, but some of you may well be ok with it.
