Are The Steam Deck & / Or The ROG Ally Handhelds A Way Into & A Good First Gaming PC? Which Is Best?
PC gaming is not a cheap hobby to get into, yet the new generation of hand-held PC's do ask the question - could any of them make a good first gaming PC, and are they a practical way into PC Gaming?
My answer, as I detail in this video, is that I think that if you're on a budget and are determined to get into PC Gaming via the hand-held route, I think the the ROG Ally, being a Windows 11 device, is probably the best option.
With the Ally you can install any game or launcher, just as on any other Windows Gaming PC, which you just can't do on the Steam Deck.
The Ally does have poorer battery life and Windows isn't optimized for a touch-based small screen hand-held experience, but it is a mini version of a gaming PC, whereas the Steam Deck is more of a console.
My advice would always be, budget allowing, get a "proper" gaming PC or laptop first, build up your Steam Library, and then the Deck is a sensible option - but if your budget is tight, there's no denying that the non-extreme Ally is a tempting proposition.
Thanks, Rob.
