Build Your Roguelike Dungeon, then Hack & Slash Through It! – Cryptical Path Demo –
18Cryptical Path is an Indie, Hack and Slash Action Roguelike Dungeon Crawler with a bit of a Hand of Fate feel, where you build your own dungeon, then cut your way through it to take back what is yours!
Your Dungeon:
The dungeons in Cryptical Path are both random, and made your way, as you get a pile of rooms to place where you wish, connecting the separated rooms of the generated dungeon using found blue gems.
I really like the verticality of the dungeon, where the connecting room might be directly above you, requiring you to jump up to reach it, nice and unexpected.
You can also teleport to cleared rooms; Enter the Gungeon style; thank you!
Many of these dungeon rooms hold not just monsters, but traps too, like flame jets that will try to roast you, and roast the enemy too; remember your dodge!
These traps turn off after you clear a room, representing the player character reasserting their control over it; a nice touch.
There are also walls spikes present in the dungeon, don’t walk into them! Ouch!
Tip: You can down strike to break thin platforms below you; handy
The bombs you can knock around are fun too!
Building The Dungeon:
You build your dungeon using the blue gems, placing the different room types like Arena rooms, Elite rooms, Healing rooms, Sacrifice rooms, which let you exchange health for artifacts, and Shop rooms.
Healing is limited in the dungeon, so try not to get hit, and use those Healing rooms to top yourself off.
Gold is the within run currency, used at shops to buy passive power-ups, hearts, and the gems used to build up the dungeon.
Tip: make sure the first room you place grants enough gems to keep going, you don’t want to get stuck and have to restart!
There are also the treasure rooms.
Treasure Rooms:
These Treasure rooms let you pick 1 of 2 artifacts when you open the chest, items like the Stoneskin oil that reduces damage taken by ½ heart, with a min of ½ taken, or a Protective Charm, which makes healing block the next hit received, or the Pearl of the Void, which grants a 50% chance of a black hole spawning each time you kill a foe!
Some of the artifacts have a pronounced negative side, like the Enigmatic Bracelet, that grants +25 spell damage, but consumes all magic charges at once, or the Poisoned Chalice will increase all your damage by 30%, but you take 2x damage; ouch!
Controller Support is present, and good, as is Mouse and Keyboard support.
As a 2D Sidescroller, I found the gamepad just felt better here, so that is what I used above.
Note: This is an early look at Cryptical Path so any bugs or other oddness is not representative of the final product.
Still, Cryptical Path is a fun 2D, Action Roguelike Sidescroller that lets you literally shape the dungeon as you play it, and is easily well worth a wishlist and a watch.
