Roguelike Smash & Blast Action! With This Club I Rule! – Rogue Labyrinth Demo –
Rogue Labyrinth is an Indie, Hack and Slash, Action Roguelike with Random Dungeons, bright Pixel Graphics and a very funky and jazzy sound.
Fun.
The Dungeon:
The random dungeons of Rogue Labyrinth are made up of battle rooms of various sizes, packed with monsters, terrain, and traps to defeat for upgrades and more power.
The monsters are varied, some just run up an attack you, others shoot projectiles at you, that you can bounce back with a club whack, while others hide in bushes until you come over and wack em out!
The traps are even more varied: there are mushrooms that give off some kind of spores that appear to hurt you, thorn vines, spike traps, flame traps, spiked ball traps, crossbow traps, and explosive flowers, so there are many interesting traps to avoid.
After each cleared room, you pick from the available prizes when you open the chest; or forgo a pick for some credits, the in-run currency used for upgrades for the current run.
There are also vending machines that let you spend credits to choose 1 of 3 upgrades.
There are special rooms too, like break rooms with a healing fountain you can either heal with, or upgrade a power, and they have a vending machine too, or Fame rooms where you can pay for fame, which helps you get aid from the audience after your battles.
There are boss fights mixed up in the dungeons as well, beat em down for a prize!
The Combat:
The combat in Rogue Labyrinth is fast and fun.
There is no bump damage on monsters here, so they have to make the effort and actually make an attack to hurt you; good!
When you hit a monster; you bump them back; good; this gives the main character’s 2 handed club attacks weight.
Remember: Yellow Health bar = cannot be stunned
Red Health bar = can be stunned
Bosses can never be stunned.
You also have a thornball, a spiked ball you throw at enemies; it bounces around, and is able to hit many enemies as it bounces and rebounds off the walls.
And that is before you upgrade it to explode!
You can also melee hack enemies projectiles back at them; fun!
And you can knock around rocks; handy.
Meta Progression:
Meta Progression is present in Rogue Labyrinth in the form of coins used in the gift shop to unlock bonuses, like starting with 20 more cash, fountains healing for 50% instead of 34%, golden bushes spawning, that when destroyed grant 5 credits, stuff like that.
Controller support is present, and good, while keyboard play is limited to two hands on keyboard; as there is no current mouse support in game.
I went with the gamepad here.
Note: This is an early look at Rogue Labyrinth so any bugs or other oddness is not representative of the final product.
Still, Rogue Labyrinth is a fast and fun Action Roguelike with Random Dungeons and a charming Top Down Pixel graphic presentation, and is easily well worth a wishlist and a watch.
