A good JRPG is a balancing act. You need the right amount of pre-battle planning to contrast with in-battle tactics and action, you need dungeons just the right length, and you need a story that starts out accessible but runs deep. Tales of the Abyss nails a couple of those points, but then some jerk named Leon storms in, throws a hissy fit, knocks over everything you've tried to build, and stomps off like a child. It's tough to enjoy a game when you want to reach through the screen and slap the protagonist. Over and over again. And it's in 3D, which would make his pain even more beautiful.
