Chicory: A Colorful Tale - Everything you need to know in 2 minutes! [Gamepass]
Chicory - A ColourfulTale immerses you in a world stripped of colours, where you step into the shoes of a dog janitor armed with a magical paintbrush to restore vibrancy and battle a mysterious evil force. The entire world is a blank canvas waiting for you to colour it in, with trees, plants, and mechanisms that react to your paint in different ways, creating intricate puzzles. As you progress, you unlock additional paint abilities allowing you access to new avenues for exploration. The game is packed with puzzles, side-quests, and collectibles, including a huge array of clothes that can be painted on the fly.
However, Chicory falls short of its potential. While the blank canvas concept is captivating, its not used in any ground-breaking way. Colour choice or staying within lines doesn't matter, and the paint adds little more than visual impact to a standard puzzle game. Visual cues occasionally falter, leaving players uncertain about how to progress, and the game features more back-tracking than I would like.
Furthermore, the game's tone fluctuates wildly, with the main game feeling childish, while themes dealt with in the story can be dark and blatantly handled. The boss battles also feel extended and stressful, disjoint from the flow of the rest of the game, but they are skippable.
With an approximate play time of 6 hours for the main storyline, it feels slightly too long, as the new mechanics added during the game fail to add any new sparks of enjoyment. I'm sure even the most ardent completionist will be skipping collectables by the end of the game. Chicory has both highs and lows, but can at best be described as solid, but definitely not a must-play.
Overall, I give this game 63 percent.
