Following two releases from Capcom, the Devil May Cry series built a so-so reputation;
its 2001 debut was a critical and financial hit and is responsible for establishing the character-action genre, whereas the sequel was an embarrassment on many levels, like the unbalanced combat and Dante's jarring turn in persona.

Even with the mess of Devil May Cry 2, it was commercially successful to consider another entry, but Hideaki Itsuno was still overseeing the next game.
However, he didn't want the new title to be just as bad, if not worse than before, despite replacing a previous employee during DMC2's troubled development.
In 2005, he and his team would deliver on that goal with Devil May Cry 3: Dante's Awakening, a game that is still fun, but more importantly, saved the series from a premature end.
